Product description
Natural Belgian Coticule whetstone for precise honing of blades. Coticule rock is extremely rare, hence every fragment of it is used for the production of whetstones. Irregular shape with a surface of 12-18cm^2. The brittle sharpening rock is attached to a blue slate, which is only a structural element.
Coarse sharpening is achieved using less water and more pressure. Garnets in the stone are released and form a suspension under the influence of water. With lighter pressure in the suspension formed on the Coticule, hard garnet particles are able to wear deeper as they roll freely on the surface of the stone. In this way, we obtain a precise sharpening finish on metal.
Belgian Coticule whetstone - properties
- The grit of the whetstone is 8-10 thousand grains / square inch of sieve.
- The hardness of the garnets makes them able to hone any type of steel, including stainless steel (including 18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel), Damascus steel and HSS high-speed steel.
- The life of the stone depends on the application. The more intensive the use, the faster the stone will wear out. In general, our whetstones will last up to 20 years of normal use.
- The irregular shape of this whetstone form minimises waste of the precious Coticule stone - the surface of the whetstone can vary from 12 to 18 cm square.
- Water is always used for sharpening. Simply moisten the surface of the whetstone - there is no need to immerse the stone. During sharpening, silicate garnets are released from the surface of the stone. The more garnets are released, the more abrasive the grinding compound becomes.
Please note: not all whetstones are stamped with the 'handmade in Belgium' name and logo. They are sent randomly.
