Product description

The Vielsalm Coticule whetstone is a natural whetstone with a rich history. The extraction and production of Coticule in the Belgian Ardennes dates back to the 17th century.

The Vielsalm Coticule whetstone – features

  • The Belgian whetstone consists of 30 to 42% garnet crystals bonded with mica. These garnets give the Coticule its unique sharpening properties
  • The smooth shape of the garnets means that they sharpen metal without leaving any fine burrs. This gives a delicate shine without scratching the blade, which makes it much easier to use.
  • The hardness of the garnets means that they are able to hone any type of steel, including stainless steel (including 18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel), Damascus steel and HSS.
  • The lifespan depends on the application. The more intensive the use, the faster the stone will wear out. Generally speaking, Coticule whetstones can last up to 20 years of normal use.
  • The grit of a Coticule sharpening stone is 8000-10000 on the grit scale.

Water is always used for sharpening:

Simply moisten the surface of the Coticule – there is no need to immerse the stone.
During sharpening, silicate garnets are released from the surface of the Coticule. The more garnets are released, the more abrasive the grinding compound becomes.
